When the NWEA film crew visited La Joya for this story, Sebastian’s mother invited the whole team over to her house for a lovely visit and a freshly brewed cup of coffee.

If you spend any time at all in the Texas border town of La Joya, you’ll feel it. “You can go to the furthest corner of our district and somebody’s going to invite you into their home for a cup of coffee and a taco. You can do that in every corner of our district,” says Sebastian Duque Jr., Director of Assessment and Accountability for La Joya ISD.

Those who grew up and went to school in La Joya often stay, so the economic future of the city is very closely tied to the success of its students. This is just one of the reasons why leadership in the district has made a promise to the community they have every intention of keeping:
