Early learning assessment can close gaps early—and increase equity

Despite what we know about the importance of early childhood and primary education, there’s a debate in education circles as to whether assessment is appropriate for our youngest learners. The controversy usually stems from critics assuming assessment only looks one way. But assessment is more than a long, standardized, high-stakes, multiple-choice test, which would not be appropriate for early learners. And it can give educators a valuable view into what the youngest of kids are learning and how they’re preparing to learn about more complex topics.

Pre-K and early childhood education are critical for providing children with meaningful learning opportunities and developing social-emotional skills, like relationship building. Pre-K in particular serves as a bridge to kindergarten, one designed to prepare children to be successful in elementary school and beyond.
